A higher dice result does not automatically cancel the opponent. To negate an enemy action, choose an action that counters the same target area and roll higher. If your action attacks a different area, both actions can resolve. Ship Health or Crew reaching zero loses the event. Most Battle actions cost Supplies; switch to Support actions when you need to recover Supplies before continuing.

Why a higher roll can still hurt you
Dice determine the degree of success, but actions are resolved by target. If you attack Ship Health while the opponent attacks Crew, both sides can take their respective damage even when one roll is higher.
A true counter requires your action to address the same area as the enemy action and your roll to be higher.
Protect the two defeat bars
Ship Health and Crew are separate loss conditions. An event ends in defeat if either reaches zero, so the safer action may be a counter or recovery play rather than the highest-damage card.
Use Support before Supplies run out
Most Battle actions consume Supplies. The official beginner guide says the Battle/Support toggle provides options to restore Supplies, allowing the player to return to Battle actions instead of becoming stuck with too few choices.
